New Internal Letter of Intent on OSCAR

$

Greetings!

For all those who are heraldically inclined, Ealdormere has just released both an Internal and an External Letter of Intent on OSCAR (http://oscar.sca.org/).  Please go forth and comment!

For those of you wondering what the deuce I just said, OSCAR is the system where heralds review name and armoury submissions.  The internal letter comes first; each submission is reviewed at the kingdom level.  This is a chance to check for any issues or conflicts and to resolve them before the submission progresses to the Society level.  The External Letter of Intent is assembled once the Kingdom commentary is complete. At this point, heralds from all around the Known World review the submissions before the final decisions are made to register or return each one.  The entire process (assuming there are no issues or that issues are resolved at the Kingdom level) takes about 7-8 months.

If you are interested in submitting a name, device, badge, household name or badge, or learning more, please feel free to contact me (Nicolaa), Green Mantle Herald, at green.mantle.herald@gmail.com.

The Pennsic War site has posted the following update:

In compliance with new Pennsylvania Commonwealth Law and due to potential medical risk considerations involving martial activities the following policy is now in effect:
Minors authorized in Martial activities and bearing a gold tape diamond on their helms on which their parent or legal guardian’s cell phone number is written, may participate in battles. Parents should have the cell phone in hand in case of emergency.

According to the Midrealm Gazette, youth fencers should have their gold diamond sticker on the cuff of their gauntlet.

Greetings Ealdormere!

We are well pleased with Our Crown Tourney, never have We seen such a colorful, heraldry filled display by combatants and their consorts. The Queen was apparently responsible for the fine weather, despite the dust cloud that surged thru the list later in the day.

Thank you to the Barony of Rising Waters for hosting the event. Things ran smoothly and you are to be congratulated for a successful event! Wassail as well to the Feast staff – a fanciful array of foods that were as pleasing to the eye as to the taste.

We would also congratulate the combatants who entered Our Crown Tourney. All of you showed immense honor and prowess both on and off the list.  To the consorts, your inspiration shone brighter than the sun.

Congratulations to Tormot Quilliam, victor of the Tourney and his consort Domhnaill Galbraith. The Line of the North is secure and We are confident it will be in good hands someday.

Wassail!

Hi all. I have been asked by our delightful new Minister of Arts and Sciences to run a Kingdom A&S Moot, to be held Friday morning of Trillium War. Some of the topics for potential discussion are:

  • redefining/removing the five categories
  • how we define beginner/intermediate/advanced entrants, and
  • how any changes to those would affect Pentathalon

I'd love to hear any other ideas for discussion! Please distribute this widely.

Peerage Pathways Project seeks input

The Peerage Pathways Project, an independent anthropological study studying attitudes towards the peerages across the knowne world, is seeking input from both peers and non-peers alike.

According to their Facebook page:

The Peerage Pathways Project seeks to gather information about an individual’s experiences on their journey to elevation. This knowledge will be gathered to provide a better understanding to the Society populace and educate us on both positive trends as well as opportunities for growth. Each person’s path to Peerage is different. When searching the internet for information about this topic, I found a lot of individual accounts that helped to set a framework. I know there are thousands of more experiences and stories to be told. My mission is to collect those narratives, so they can be shared with the Known World. This is an Unofficial SCA Group and an independent study.

The survey for the general populace and for peers can both be found on Survey Monkey.

Knight on a Bike: Quest for Tomorrows

Unto all Kings, Princes, Knights, Squires, Men of Coat armor, and those who pursue Knightly Enterprise under the many banners of Chivalric culture, and who be not enemies of Chivalry do I, Robert D. Roach, Knight of the SCA, Knight of the Drawn Sword, Principle of the Company of the Black Swan, Leftennant of the Company of St. Jude, send heartfelt greetings.

I would have you know that I have been blessed by the Divine beyond my worth. I hold the favor of Family far beyond my Station, and have been witness to Deeds of Arms performed by the some of the Greatest, most Puissant Knights of this Century.
I have reveled with Great Men and Women, Gone to tournament in sacred places, and been taught by the greatest of teachers. I have earned the love of Brothers in arms who would bleed for me, and have been ennobled by small Deeds of Arms performed upon my person by fierce Knights from all the corners of this World.

But I must confess that, though I have striven under the banner of Chivalric good; though I have forwarded the name of my Family in the hottest press, I have done so many times drunken upon my own vanity and pleasure.

I have thought myself brave, stalwart, and strong.

I will tell you truly, though my lust for Great Deeds is strong, and I have traveled the breadth of this world pursuing them like a hound bays at the hart, My thirst is not slated. When the mason etches out my effigy, it will not have been enough. I count the days I have spent on the pleasantries of court and the ease of strength as of little consequence and wasted opportunity.

For though I have won some modicum of Renown, my youth is now burned away, and I am left only with weakness of body and the very great desire to Honor those more brave than I. My fevered head is filled with the desire to leave some small thing which is good in this World.

But in spite of this appetite , I have neither the wealth of the Great Lords, nor the wisdom of physicians. I am merely a Knight growing feeble, surrounded by slowly tarnishing trophies in an empty hall.

Before I am dead, or too fat and weak from too much time at banquet, I have set my purpose upon an enterprise, and have bent all my will upon it; I would do some small thing to Honor and give comfort to those children and youth who shame me with their bravery each hour of God’s day by their constant strength of will.

And so, you Nobles of Coat armor from all of this World’s Knightly traditions, I would send forth to you this, my Defiance and Declaration. I shall journey around this globe, awaiting at crossroads, castles and cities as our ancestors did so that I may receive the blessing of Noble Challengers. I shall travel ever east from the gate of my keep, through the Kingdoms of Christendom, through the orient and the Holy City of Jerusalem, through the Last Templar holdings of Cyprus, even unto the Great Kingdom of Prestor John and beyond, in search of succor for those who are in great need, and in the hopes that Noble Knights may do some Deed of Arms upon my person so that these very same Children may be honored.

I shall travel with harness of tournament . I shall receive all Noble Challengers with batons or rebated swords of steel as our Ancestors did; at crossroads, or at any great gathering of Men of Coat Armor. Thus will Chivalry, and these stalwart children be served by our efforts.

Look you to your harness, so that you may be well prepared upon my passing.
Upon this missive and purpose do I set my hand and seal,

Robert D. Roach

50 Demos in AS 50 Challenge

$

The Kingdom Chatelaine of AEthelmearc has issued the following challenge:

The Historical new Masters of Defense Peerage, the addition of Avacal as the 20th Kingdom, and the awe-inspiring pageantry and chivalry shown at AEthelmearc’s Celebration of Rapier and Crown Tournament, A.S. 50 is already off to an exciting start. Let’s keep that excitement going, by sharing it with others, and helping our Kingdom grow.

The challenge is simple – hold 50 demos throughout the Kingdom in A.S. 50 (May 1, 2015 – April 30, 2016) 50 demos may sound like a lot, but it breaks down to only 10 demos per region over the course of the year. Four demos have already happened in May, and there’s another 8 on the calendar, so we’re already 1/4 of the way there.

We have the full support of Their Majesties, Their Highnesses, and the Kingdom Seneschal. Your Regional and Local Chatelaines have lots of ideas and resources for new demos. The new Kingdom Media Liaison, Lord Arias, has the press releases/media kits/additional resources to help you contact the local media to draw more attention & attendees to your demos. The Kingdom Demo Calendar will have all the demos listed, so you can see when/where the demos are happening, and how you can help with them.

If we all come together and focus on growing the Kingdom to help ensure the future of this great society, I’m confident that we will be able to meet this challenge.

In Service & Assimilation,
THLDesiderataDrakeAEthelmearcKingdomChatelaine

Is Ealdormere up to meeting this challenge? Ealdormere's Deputy Kingdom Chatelaine thinks so, and is encouraging the groups of the kingdom to hold as many different kinds of demos as possible over the coming year. After each demo, the organizer is asked to please fill out the Chatelaine Demo Report.

Op Ed: Why I Play

Source: Wikimedia Commons.
A story about why I play in the SCA and why I feel it is full of beautiful people.

First a little bit about me. I was born missing three fingers on my right hand, my right arm is shorter than my left and my elbow is fused and does not bend. I am in my late 30s and have adapted quite well to learning how to do things differently. It really doesn't stop me nor does my disability really bother me. However, there are a few things in life that I have always wanted to try but have struggled to find a way to do...until now. Archery was one of those things. I attempted to shoot a bow a few times but I was unable to get a strong draw and hold the bow steady. While talking about my struggles with my friends, they recommended trying a crossbow. The thought intrigued me, but I honestly did not want to spend a significant amount of money on an item I wasn't sure was going to work for me. My friends took me to the New World Arbalest merchant booth at Gulf Wars last year to speak to Master Iolo about my physical limitations and to see if there was a way for me to set and shoot a cross bow. His apprentice had a Mongolian Horse Crossbow for me to try and as soon as I shot it, I was in love. I wanted to take it home and give it a name. Unfortunately I was not prepared for a large purchase and this particular model was above my price point. We came to an arrangement where I would save the money I needed for a crossbow and would commission it from "Dirty" (a name that, in my opinion, does not fit this beautiful lady one bit).

A year later I had saved a little over half of what I would need to commission the crossbow. At this year's Gulf Wars, I was encouraged to visit the booth again. They both remembered me, we embraced, and talked about measurements, wood choices, and what it would take to make it comfortable for my use. This is when the friend I was with informed me that there was a group of people who were inspired by my story and contributed to "the cause". Combined, they raised the rest of what I would need to commission the crossbow. Tears of surprise and joy commenced. More hugging happened. I went back to my encampment to get the money needed. When I returned, Dirty informed me that there was a gentleman watching this exchange and he was so moved by my story and the generosity of the others, he donated an "undisclosed amount of money" which would allow Dirty to add features to make it even more beautiful. I honestly don't know who this person is, or where he hails from, but sir, you have my eternal gratitude and I want you to know I fully plan to pay that kindness forward when the opportunity presents itself. You have my word.

Throughout the week I would learn that even more people would come together to take care of whatever else I needed to be able to finally participate in archery after 20 years of playing in the Society. Here is where I come to the main point of this story. I honestly don't think I could find another group of people who would come together to give someone a chance to do a hobby. I know there are stories of people helping others in times of need, in times of chaos, or in times of struggle. Here, in the SCA, you find people coming together no matter what. The generosity, kindness, thoughtfulness, and care found here is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. These are people who truly want others to find their bliss and will come together spontaneously to see that happen. I may not always feel significant in the modern world, but in the SCA, I feel truly blessed with both the friends I know and the friends I may not know now, but hope to in the future. This is the place I want to raise my children and if they learn only a fraction of what others can teach them about how to treat their fellow person, I will consider their upbringing a success.

It will take a little while for Dirty to make my crossbow. I promise to follow up here with a picture of it when I obtain it. In the meantime, buy ALL THE THINGS from Swift Hound Bows and New World Arbalest. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about these merchants and their enthusiasm and grace. To all of you that came together to do something to make me happy, don't be surprised if you get a hug from me in the future. Also, if you happen to see me with a tear or two in my eyes, know it is not tears of sadness but rather tears of joy at the thought that so many people came together to do something nice for me. You may not know just how much you all mean to me now, but I promise you that you will find out in time.

Yours Ever in Service to the Dream,

Baroness Isabella Beatrice della Rosa,
Kingdom of Northshield

The following was posted to the Murder Melee Facebook event page today:

IMPORTANT UPDATE

The members of the Barony of Ben Dunfirth and the autocrat and staff of this year’s Melee event would like to express our concern and support for the family and friends of the man who went missing in LakeNiapencoon Monday night. We understand this is a very difficult time, and hope for a swift and positive resolution.

As a result of the investigation into his disappearance, the park will be closed to the general public (but open to us) until Saturday and there will be a police presence on site. The gate will be closed but not locked during the day on Thursday and Friday. Please enter and close the gate behind you. Attendees are reminded to cooperate with any instructions given by the Hamilton Police Service and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, and to immediately report any unusual activity or found items to the autocrat so they can be communicated to the appropriate authorities. We encourage you to stay away from the beach and lake area until further notice. It is our sincere hope that this situation will be resolved soon, and that Melee will be able to continue with minimal disruption.

Information on the missing man can be read here.
